Christmas Memories Contest

What: One of 2 $25.00 Amazon.com gift cards
Deadline: December 14th 12:00 PM PST

Contest Details:

This blog of mine is really mostly about reflections of my life. I contemplated for a while getting into the whole review scene but was scared away by my lawyer. Personally I thought it was a sad commentary on society that someone could lose their house just by writing that they didn’t like a brownie but being the risk adverse person that I am his conversation really put an end to any ideas I ever had about being a review blogger so here I am just a conversationalist trying to tell you a story.

Anyways what does that blurb have to do with holding a contest you say ? Well in the spirit of the blog I thought I’d tell you about a favourite Christmas memory and you could tell me about one of yours.

My Mother died about 3 years ago and I knew the first Christmas after she passed would be difficult so we packed up my daughter and drove 14 hours through the snow to go have Christmas with my family. My daughter was 3 at the time.

Now my Dad is very generous and I think he knew how difficult this Christmas was going to be on all of us so he kind of went overboard on Christmas presents.

I had also participated in a stocking exchange with one of the Moms in my moms group so my daughter also ended up with 25 small gift wrapped packages in a stocking from a very generous Mom.

Carting the presents without destroying the surprise was a big challenge too as fortunately she didn’t question what was in the 3 big boxes in the back of the SUV !

Anyways on Christmas morning my daughter was so excited that she didn’t even open any presents for 10 minutes she just wandered around looking at them all and the innocence and surprise I will remember forever.

When it was all said and done I think it took her about 3 hours to open all of her gifts and it took my husband 4 hours to load the SUV when we left !

Honestly though that wasn’t my favourite memory. My favourite memory was having my whole family together for Christmas. That was three years ago and it hasn’t happened since. We’d love to go back again but my daughter is just too smart now and there would be no way to smuggle Santa Claus presents in the SUV all the way to Alberta.

So here’s the contest. For your mandatory entry please share with me and my readers one of your favourite Christmas memories.

Additional entries may be obtained as follows:

1- Blog about this contest (one entry)

2- Follow this blog (2 additional entries. Please list two separate comments)

3- Tweet this giveaway (Maximum one entry/day)

4- Add my button to your blog (2 additional entries. Please list two separate comments)

5- Follow me on Twitter

The first winner will be chosen from a random draw from all the entires and the second winner I will pick myself based on my favorite story.

One of my favorite Christmas memories is the year that one of my Dad's friends, dressed up as Santa and on Christmas morning, showed up with a little toy poodle for me. I wanted a pet for a few years and couldn't have been happier. Loved that Poodle for many, many years. Thanks so much.

My favorite Christmas memory was when I was a little girl. We were dirt poor. My dad worked fast food and my mom worked as a CNA but that wasn't enough to provide a Christmas for 4 kids. I was the oldest and I was 8 years old. Then, we got a knock on our door. A non profit organization called "angel tree" somehow got our name and brought a HUGE tree WITH decorations and gifts! My mom cried tears of joy and I was excited about the most beautiful tree we ever had (and it was real too!)

My favorite Christmas memory was when my stepfather gave me a doll named Giggles for Christmas. He was my new stepfather at the time, and I thought, even at age 7, that it meant that he cared.

My favorite Christmas memory happened when my twin sister and I were little. It was just days after our birthday and we were going through Sears after seeing Santa at the mall. Before we reached the exit doors, my sister and I happened to catch the sight of a huge Disney toy castle. We had just had our birthday but begged to have it for Christmas. When Mom and Dad said "no", we trekked through the rest of the store, mad. But as we came down the stairs on Christmas morning, guess what we saw? I learn years later that they bought it before we even saw it!

My favorite memory is the year we had no money. My daughter and I went out into the woods behind our house, cut down a tiny tree, went home and made construction paper ornaments and popcorn garland. We had a blast doing it and it was probably the best Christmas tree ever.

Aw I have to say that your story seriously had me tearing up.

I would say my favorite Christmas has to be in 2007. It was the month before my grandma found out she had Cancer. It was the last time we had any real sense of the holidays that I remembered.

There really wasn't anything special about it, we didn't do anything different, but I think in my heart or a distant feeling I knew this was going to be the last time I had this togetherness(my mom & uncle don't talk and are only in the same room for special events like holidays). I remember all the smells, my grandma in her festive, yet tacky lol, holiday sweater and just the smile on her face when we came in the house. I remember that the stockings were filled with the same thing as past years. The boys got socks and pens and the girls got perfumes and lip gloss/nail polish. She had the little kids filled with crayons/race cars, bracelets and pony tail holders.

I remember how she had her decorations, the houses in her bay window, the talking santa on her front door. I also remember walking down stairs to find this HUGE fake tree filled up with various ornaments that we made, the Disney ones she would get in the mail and various other mixed up ones. I remember that the presents had to extend about a foot outside the tree that was how many it was.

She was always anxious about cooking so it was always practically cold when we all ate, but you know what it always tasted so good and it's one of those things I miss (and of course just letting it sit and get cold isn't the same). Yet what I remember most is how much love was felt in the basement when we opened presents. EVERYONE was down there waiting for their turn as the gifts were passed out 1 by 1. We had both my great aunts and their husbands, my aunt and uncle with their 3 kids, my aunt's brother and sister, myself and husband with our son, my brother, my sister with her little girl, my mom and dad, my other uncle, and my grandparents. There was so much love in the room and it didn't matter that a few of the relatives were not speaking at all to each other, it was just that we were there and able to laugh/talk/get along so well for even that brief moment.

Sorry it's so long but that will always be my favorite Christmas moment.

My mom used to like to hide our big gift. She would give us a clue in our stocking and off we would go to hunt for our treasure. I remember getting the clue "Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf". I knew immediately to head to my neighbors (he had a wolf for a pet) and there I found a new bike :).

For me, it isn't just one memory, but a compilation of memories of all the times we went to my grandparents' farm for Christmas. Most of the time, all the aunts, uncles and cousins were there, pretty much the only time the whole family made it. As we all grew up, the group actually became smaller because of the different activities and locations of the families, but I will never forget those Christmases.

The best Christmas memory I have was the year before my grandfather died. Everyone was at their house, including my great-grandmother, there was lots of good food. We had fried oysters along with the turky & ham (with the oysters left over from making dressing). I think that was the last year my grandmother made both cakes and pies. It was pretty huge for our small family, and I loved everyone being together.

My favorite Christmas memory is also a family Christmas with my daughter (about 2 at the time). Pocahontas was all the rage at the time and she adored Meeko the racoon. She got a stuffed Meeko that was bigger than she was and spent the rest of the day carting it around, until she was exhausted and fell asleep with her head on it.

Well, this is a funny memory that we have laughed about more than anything that ever happened at Christmas. My aunt was making a batch of fudge and my cousin accidently spilled a bottle of prescription medicine in the fudge. My aunt fished as much out as possible, but some melted into the fudge. Not wanting to throw out a "good" batch of fudge, she gave it to my mother. The medicine was tranqulizers and it was one of the calmest, most peaceful, and laid back Christmases our family ever had.

When my husband and I first started
out 17 years ago, we were just out of high school.
We had just moved into our own apartment and
were barely making ends meet. My husband lost
his job RIGHT before Christmas. We had no money for bills,
let alone gifts. My family gave us a christmas tree and
we were so grateful, but being that we had just
started out, we had no ornaments, lights etc...So we had a
beautiful plain green christmas tree in our living room.
I got up to go to work about a week before Christmas.
When I came home, what I saw took my breath away.
My boyfriend (now husband) had spent the entire day
cutting out paper snowflakes of all different shapes
and sizes. He had covered the entire tree with them.
It was the most beautiful tree I had ever seen and
I had never cried harder or loved him more.
Now 17 years later we are in a much better position,
but every year, the last thing that goes on the tree
is one of the paper snowflakes I saved from that year.
It means more to me than any gift that ever has been
or ever will be under the tree.

One of the best memories of Christmas was in 2001. My sister was recovering from a bone marrow transplant due to stage 4 Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and was able to leave the isolation that she was living in for about 8 hours or so.
While not all of my siblings were in town (that would be the following year) thisone was important because she was able to enjoy it. She is 8 yrs out now from the transplant.

My favorite Christmas memory is celebrating every single Christmas morning for the last 25 years with my parents, twin sister and Granny. We would wake up in the morning, open gifts from "Santa" and our parents then run downstairs to Granny's to open the gifts she had for us under the tree. We lost her this past March and I know that somehow this Christmas just won't be the same. Thanks so much!

One of my favorite memories is the year we started what would become our Christmas Eve tradition: We made 2 kinds of soup for dinner, along with homemade cornbread, and 2 dips with crackers and veggies. We sat down to eat in front of the TV while watching "A Christmas Story," and we've kept the same menu and same movie every year since. It's comforting to know that is something I can do every year, no matter how much things change!

My favorite memory was when my grandfather presented me with all handmade dollhouse along with furniture and accessories for my dollhouse. I was young and SO jealous of a fancy Victorian dollhouse a rich playmate of mine had. My parents could never afford the thousands one like hers cost, an antique furnished with the finest, so my grandfather (who worked for the phone company all his life but dreamed of being an artist and pursued art as a hobby) built the most incredible house. He built all the furniture and made many cool accessories. When I got it that Christmas he promised to install lighting for me, but he died of a heart attack not long after and never got the chance. I still cherish that doll house - but I have never had lighting installed :( I miss my grandfather - he was such an incredible man.

That year we received a barbie but also under the tree were two big white boxes with red bows. Our parents told us that we had been extra good this year ad santa left us something special. We tore into those boxes like crazy girls. And in the boxes were 2 white faux fur coats with sparkly buttons. OMG, we had never seen anything so beautiful. We put them on and took pictures and didn't take them off until my mom made us. We wore those coats all winter and even into Spring. What a great gift.

One year one of the dad's (I still don't know who it was) came dressed as Santa and passed out toys to all the kids. I still remember my gift...yellow and green "can" stilts (they were plastic cup type things with a long string that you walked on top of). I must have been young because my dad died when I was 13 and I know this was WAY before he was gone. I've also lost my mom (when I was 19) so that now I'm a mom (to 3 great kids!) I really try to make the holidays special. I know how special memories can last a life time!!

My favorite Christmas memory was visiting my grandmas and in came Santa Clause. Me and my sister tried to get to the window to look out after he left. We were listening to try and hear for bells and kept looking for a sleigh. I remember being excited about the whole thing.

I too lost my mom three years ago right before Thanksgiving. It was hard because she and the rest of my family lived in Colorado and I was the only one here in Ohio and I hadn't seen any of them in over 4 years. When I came back and was shopping for Christmas food in the grocery store, I just broke down crying - not loud honking tears, just the kind that continually roll down your face. I found myself doing that a lot at random times for quite some time after that, so ....

Well, this is supposed to be about my favorite Christmas memory, so I will tell you about our weirdest one.

As I said, all of my family eventually ended up in Colorado (two brothers, a sister and my mom), but my sister was the last one to move out there, so there were about 3-4 years where she and I were the only ones left here in Ohio.

I always cooked for EVERY holiday - Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, you name it. I love cooking and I love it when people are enjoying fellowship and food. I even cook big Sunday dinners where all and sundry can drop by, hang around for a bit, eat, or simply grab a plate and go.

The last Christmas that my sister was here, she decided that SHE wanted to do Christmas Eve dinner (we do our dinners on Christmas Eve and leave Christmas as the day we spend just winding down and enjoying our immediate family). MY children were somewhat apprehensive, because holidays at our house had become the tradition after my mom moved, but I thought it was a great idea for her to do it. I enjoy it, so I figured that she would enjoy it as well.

We got to the house early (thank goodness; you'll see why later). I think dinner was scheduled around 6 or 7, and we were there at around 3:30. I walked in, and nothing was cooking. Further, when I talked to my sister, she shamefacedly told me that she didn't have much of anything in the way of gifts for her own children, and didn't have presents for my children either. She was going through an extremely rough patch with her husband, and he wasn't giving any money to the household, so she was spending all of her own money just paying the bills. She was embarrassed at not having let me know sooner, but she just kept hoping that he would change up at the last minute.

We cried together and I hugged her and told her it was OK. We piled everyone (her 3 children, my 4 children and she and I) into my tiny Sportage and we took the children to a friend of hers house.

Then we went to the grocery and department stores and she was able to buy all of the holiday dinner fixings and presents for all of the children along with wrapping paper, tags and bows (all within one hour; this was Christmas Eve, after all, and everything closed early).

We drove back to the house and unloaded, then she picked up the children while I started the dinner.

When she came back, she ran into the bedroom and hurriedly wrapped gifts for my children, then joined me in the kitchen.

We were able to put dinner out relatively on time and do our Christmas exchange with the children none the wiser. It had a rocky start, but it turned out to be a great time.

One of my favorite Christmas memories is of the first Christmas with two kids. My youngest was born just a few weeks earlier, so she ended up sleeping most of the morning (after being up much of the night.) That ended up being okay, though, because then we could easily make Christmas be special for our almost three year old. We stayed home that year, which is not what we generally do, so that makes it even more memorable.

My favorite Christmas memory was the year I was in first grade and wanted a red wagon more than anything. On Christmas morning I found a shiny red wagon waiting for me under the tree and I was so excited that Santa Claus had fulfilled my wish! I dragged that wagon everywhere and we had it for years. It still makes me smile to think about how happy it made me to receive that at Christmastime.

My favorite memory was discovering that Santa had not forgotten about us even though we'd spent Christmas out of town that year. We woke up to a room filled with gifts, and I cried tears of joy because I was so afraid that Santa wouldn't be able to find us since we weren't spending Christmas day at our house.

That let me know that Santa is indeed everywhere.

My favorite Christmas memory: We usually put all the presents under the tree after the girl goes to bed on Christmas night. I had hid the presents in the rubbermaid box that had held the ornaments and stuff. My husband was pulling out the presents he found a rock (from our aquarium) and a pink ribbon bow. So, of course we had to put the rock with the big pink bow under the tree, too. In the morning we told our girl that the one with the Pink bow was hers. The pictures we have of her holding that rock are priceless.

Now, every year we still put out the "Christmas Rock" with the pink bow.
